Toothbrush Care

We may clean our mouths by brushing our teeth on a daily basis, but what about showing our toothbrush some cleanliness? Most of us simply rinse off our toothbrush after use, but if you’ve been sick in recent weeks, your toothbrush may need a little extra attention. Our doctors at Vista Dental are here to suggest toothbrush cleaning methods and care tips.

You should never share a toothbrush with a significant other as this could put you at risk for infection because of the exchange of microorganisms. If you keep your toothbrush in the same cup as others, do you best to keep them separated so that you can prevent cross-contamination. A toothbrush should never be stored in a dark place because this is where bacteria thrive. Toothbrushes should be replaced every 3-4 months or when bristles are frayed.

Extraction Reasons

Dentists may remove teeth for a variety of reasons, but the most common reason is due to a tooth being severely decayed. When trauma or decay damages a tooth or surrounding teeth, our doctors at Vista Dental will do everything they can to fix the tooth with a filling or a crown. When a tooth is damaged beyond repair, tooth extraction is necessary.

Other reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Some people have extra teeth that block other teeth from coming in.

  • Sometimes baby teeth don’t fall out in time to allow permanent teeth to come in.

  • People getting braces may need teeth extracted to create room for teeth that are being moved into place.

  • Some teeth may need to be extracted if they have the potential of becoming infected.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting has been used widely throughout medicine because of how well it helps the body heal.  The bone graft dentists perform at Vista Dental is on the jaw bone when a patient with a weakened jaw bone needs an implant.  If the bone is weak or a missing tooth has left the area exposed over a period of time, a bone graft can strengthen the jaw enough to handle the placement of an implant.

To repair the weakened portion of the bone, bone material is harvested from a healthy location in the patient’s own mouth.  The bone material is grafted onto the area the needs reinforcement and as the bone graft heals, it strengthens the jaw bone.  The healing process can take several months and should be monitored closely by a dentist until the bone is strong enough the handle the placement of a new implant.

What is a Frenectomy?

A frenectomy is a procedure to remove a frenulum, or muscular attachment between two tissues, from the mouth.  At Vista Dental, frenectomies are performed to correct a number of issues patients may have with their teeth, lips, and tongue.

There are three main frenulums in your mouth.  One is located underneath your tongue, and removing this is called a lingual frenectomy.  Patients with an enlarged frenulum underneath their tongue will not be able to move their tongue freely.  This interferes with speech and is often called ‘tongue tie’. Lingual frenectomies are typically performed on young patients, who can recover quickly and continue to develop their speech.

Another two frenulums in your mouth are between the front teeth (both upper and lower) and connect the inner surface of the lip with the gum. Removing this attachment is called a labial frenectomy.  Patients who have receding gums can benefit from this procedure, because a strong frenulum from the gum to the lip can cause extra pulling on the gums and lead to further recession.
