Lumineers For A Smile Makeover

At Vista Dental we are always being asked by patients about the latest cosmetic solutions available.  There are several methods for whitening or straightening teeth, but lumineers are the best way to give your smile a complete cosmetic makeover without undergoing a procedure.

Lumineers are thin shells made of high quality porcelain that bond directly to the surface of your teeth and look like your natural smile.  To outfit a patient with a full set of lumineers, we begin with taking an impression.  This impression will be used to ensure a perfect fit for your new smile.  Some patients won’t require preparation of the teeth, but depending on your individual case your dentist may want to contour or shave teeth in select places.  This is only done when your dentist sees an area they determine could be a problem to fit the shells on.   A new set of lumineers is fabricated outside the office, and on a final visit they are bonded directly to the surface of your teeth to wear forever!

Causes of Gapped Teeth

Are you frustrated with a gap-toothed grin? If so, the doctors of Vista Dental in Medicine Hat are here to help with a variety of cosmetic and orthodontic treatments. But in order to treat a gap, which is scientifically called a diastema, it is necessary to determine what caused it. This article focuses on gaps between the upper front incisors.

Much of the time, there is simply extra room for teeth, so they don’t close together. In these cases, we can provide correction with the Invisalign series of invisible orthodontic devices. We can also simply close the gap with veneers. However, there may also be some force that is pushing the teeth apart. The labial frenum is the vertical strip of tissue that connects the inside of the upper lip to the jaw. If it is overly thick, it may prevent the front teeth from coming together. If the patient has a habit such as thumb sucking or tongue thrusting, this may also undo orthodontic or cosmetic correction. Tongue thrusting as a nervous tick may require psychological treatment, while tongue thrusting due to swallowing or breathing difficulty may require the assistance of an ear, nose, and throat doctor.

Veneers

Veneers are an excellent way to enhance the aesthetics of a smile as well as restore its appearance if there are chips, stains, or cracks in the teeth. Veneers can also be used to close gaps or correct small misalignments in the teeth. Dental veneers can be made of porcelain or from resin composite materials. Porcelain veneers resist stains better than resin veneers and better mimic the light reflecting properties of natural teeth. Resin veneers are thinner and require removal of less of the tooth surface before placement. Once you and the doctor decide that veneers are right for you, the process should take one to two appointments. Local anesthesia is usually not required, but if the procedure makes you apprehensive, we can discuss sedation options.
